I had this idea for my shoot because even though it's a depression shoot, I wanted to show both sides of the emotions which people who suffer depression go through. Therefore this image symbolises bipolar depression, sometimes they are happy, other times they just want to be in bed alone with no one else around them. This image has the denotation of two images being inside one, someone sitting up and someone laying in bed. Contrasting the connotation of the symbolic meaning behind it to do with bipolar depression.

Much like the image above, I wanted to show the two sides of depression. Sometimes they are happy, sometimes they are sad. Also, this can show how even though someone looks happy, they may still be suffering with a mental illness such as depression. This image holds the denotation of having a happy face edited with a sad face. Although the connotation much like the image above is symbolic for the contrasting emotions in which people feel when suffering with depression.

For this image I wanted to have snoot-like effect, so a light was only in one part, snoots are used in a studio to force the direction of a light. As I done this shoot at home, I didn't have a shoot, so I made one. This symbolises depression because it puts the rest of her body in darkness, this can be because she may not want to be there, she is hiding from herself, from her illness. As my lighting was much darker than the above images, my camera setting had to be much lower because I needed quite a bit of lighting to show the image, however I didn't want my setting so low than my photos came out over exposed. This image has the denotation of someones eye being the lightest part in the image but holding the connotation of someone feeling lost within them self and just wanting to hide away, through this connotation we can see both the mental illness of depression and Anxiety.

For this image I took two separate photos, using two different gels. For the top one I used a pink gel, and for the bottom I exposed my subject straight to the light. The reason for me putting these two images together was to symbolise depression as it shows different ways people suffer from the illness. For example the top one is pink, the tears are hard to make out, where as the bottom one it is much clearer she is crying. I wanted this effect to show how even though someone doesn't clearly show pain, they still might feel it. Furthermore the pink can symbolic the mental struggle of confusing, she doesn't know what she should be doing. Whereas the bottom one showing clearly the tears, she is stuck with herself in this form- this therefore shows the connotation of this image.

For this image I got my subject to stand on the other side of a window and got her to breathe on it. I wanted this affect because I thought it helped show the hiding aspect of depression, she wants to hide away. Much like the image with the snoot effect, only her right eye is clearly visible. I wanted this because it shows there is still life in her, its just the rest of her feels dead, numb from the pain of not wanting to be here- this is the connotation for this image. Whereas the denotation is just someone standing on the other side of a pain of glass.
